The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Amputee Rehabilitation program meets the physical and emotional needs of patients and their families facing limb loss due to accident, illness or birth defect. Our program is designed to bring clients, their families and their prosthetist together with our trained professionals to provide maximum functional ability.

Care considerations involve the amputation and the prevention of complications and future amputations. Care and follow-up for these individuals requires a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. Each person is evaluated by our team of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and social work experts.

Patients achieve the highest function possible through education and care including:

  • Achieving comfort and independence with an amputation for those without a prosthesis
  • Care for your amputation, including wound care, phantom pain/phantom sensation, residual limb management and desensitization
  • Assistance with choosing the appropriate prosthesis for best fit and function
  • Prevention of complications
  • Return to daily activities (walking and climbing stairs) and work/community integration
  • Return to driving, if applicable
